Therapy can be many things to many people. When people choose to work with me, they'll find out more about my approach. I look at therapy as a means to find out more about who we are. It is through the wisdom of knowing ourselves that we are able to navigate the barriers we perceive in life with considerably increased success.
If one thinks about going to school and the huge amount of information one is taught, how much of that information is remembered, how much of it changed the way you thought, or changed how you went about your life, you'll begin to understand my approach. A person may continually struggle with retaining information or understanding certain information. A secret many of us learn and something that can change education for many of us is to stop focusing on the information itself and, instead, focus on how one learns or how one retains and understands information. Essentially, one would focus on learning about how one learns. Once this is understood, much of the information will come easier.
Therapy focuses not only on how one learns but how one thinks about thinking. A favorite term of mine is and has been metacognition (such a pretty term, please look it up). This is a foundation to understanding one's self. Much of the way society is structured, we are taught that we all think the same and that if you don't think like "everyone else" (I'm still trying to figure out who the "everyone else" actually is) you are different and possibly inferior. This couldn't be further from the truth. It is our independent way of thinking that allows people to reach their full potential and once one understands how they think and how they learn, they can also develop a stronger sense of self and self-agency or autonomy. The process of individuation or developing a positive sense of self can help to increase self-esteem and decrease the negative effects of mental health issues such as depression or anxiety.
We are all capable of doing better than we think we can, especially when you understand more about how you think, how you learn, and who we are.
